The challenge is to raise £25,000 for local charities and community groups, and East Herts YMCA is part of the action.
The annual Dragon’s Apprentice Challenge was launched on October 1st by the Community and Voluntary Service Broxbourne and East Herts (CVSBEH). It provides a platform linking students (Year 12/Lower 6th) from schools and colleges with local businesses and charities – with the aim of using entrepreneurship to turn £100 into £1000 for the matched charity by March 2015.
At the launch ceremony the atmosphere reached fever pitch in the auditorium ahead of the draw being announced. First out of the hat was East Herts YMCA, matched with an apprentice group of ladies from The Bishop’s Stortford High School and a Dragon from Stansted Airport Ltd, Claire Callaghan, Customer Service Team Manager.
We were absolutely delighted with the draw, and we held our first business meeting straight away. First order of business was to decide on a team name – Y-Flyers! The ladies spent a little time getting to know us and Claire and pondered some early ideas. A challenge was set for the six formers to finalise the idea of how they wish to fundraise within 2 days of our first meeting!
Next on the agenda was a tour of the YMCA where the ladies came up with some wonderful ideas which perfectly encompass the ethos of East Herts YMCA.
Our next meeting took place up at Stansted Airport on October 8th, and gave the Y-Flyers a chance to work through their ideas with Claire and evaluate the opportunities which the Airport could offer.
Onwards and upwards turning £100 into £1000 for East Herts YMCA!
